GLACIER AND SNOWMOBILE SAFETY

Langjökull Glacier Safety

QUICK ANSWER

Safety

The safest visitor route is to reach the confirmed meeting point, transfer with the operator and remain with the guide on the glacier.

Langjökull is moving ice in an exposed highland environment. Crevasses can be hidden by snow, visibility can collapse, and a safe route can change between departures. A map or vehicle track does not prove that an independent route is safe.

Guided snowmobile products include protective equipment and a briefing, but visitors still need to meet the age and driver rules, arrive in suitable personal clothing and follow the live instructions for their date.

01

Meeting point

Drive only to the location confirmed on the latest voucher.

02

Transfer

Use the operator’s vehicle for the highland and glacier approach.

03

Glacier

Stay behind the guide and inside the chosen formation.

MOVING ICE

Glacier

Glacier hazards are not always visible from the surface.

01

Crevasses

Deep cracks can be open, bridged by snow or appear after a route was previously used. SafeTravel publishes updated crevasse maps for experienced glacier travellers, but the maps do not remove the need for training and equipment.

02

Whiteout

Cloud, snow and flat light can remove the horizon and make distance or slope difficult to judge. Stay with the guide even when the terrain appears open and flat.

03

Ice walls

Glacier edges, steep ice and natural cave entrances can change or shed ice. Do not approach an ice feature that the guide has not opened for the group.

04

Cold

Wind exposure and wet clothing can cool the body quickly. The protective suit is an outer layer, not a replacement for warm personal clothing.

Independent access

SafeTravel advises that visitors should never go onto a glacier without experience or proper equipment and recommends hiring a qualified guide who knows the area.

GUIDED RIDING

Snowmobiling

The guide controls the route, pace, spacing and stopping points. The group protects itself by following the same plan.

BEFORE

Listen

  • Wear the helmet and supplied outer gear correctly
  • Learn the throttle, brake and stop signal
  • Tell the guide about any uncertainty before departure
  • Confirm who will drive and who will ride as passenger
DURING

Follow

  • Stay in the order chosen by the guide
  • Keep the instructed distance from the machine ahead
  • Use the guide’s tracks and do not cut corners
  • Reduce speed smoothly and avoid sudden direction changes
STOP

Wait

  • Stop only where directed
  • Keep the helmet on until the guide says otherwise
  • Do not walk away from the marked group area
  • Report a fall, impact or equipment problem immediately
Two people sharing

The base booking on the current listings generally assumes two guests on one snowmobile. A solo upgrade normally costs extra and can depend on capacity.

Driver changes

Only change drivers when the guide permits it and both guests meet the driver’s licence and operator requirements.

FAST CHANGE

Weather

Conditions at Reykjavík, Gullfoss, Geysir or Húsafell do not reliably describe the glacier plateau.

WIND

Exposure

Wind is stronger on open high ground and can increase cold stress, reduce control and delay transfers.

VISIBILITY

Whiteout

Cloud and blowing snow can erase contrast. The operator may use a different route or stop the activity.

PRECIPITATION

Surface

Rain, wet snow and refreeze affect roads, clothing and grip. Waterproof layers remain useful in every season.

TIMING

Delay

Leave margin after the tour. A weather change can alter the return time even when the departure proceeds.

PUBLIC ROAD VS GLACIER

Roads

Drive to the confirmed meeting point, not to a generic glacier pin.

1

Reykjavík

Pickup removes the self-drive section, but visitors still need to reach the designated bus stop or terminal on time.

2

Gullfoss and Geysir

These are established Golden Circle destinations. Winter ice, wind and closures can still affect arrival.

3

Húsafell

Húsafell is reached on public roads. Seasonal onward access may be handled by the operator.

4

Highlands

Highland roads can be rough, seasonal and unsuitable for ordinary vehicles. Off-road driving is forbidden.

DO NOT FOLLOW TRACKS

Vehicle tracks are not permission

A track may belong to a modified operator vehicle, may lead across unsafe terrain or may have been made under different conditions.

A licence is required for each driver. Confirm non-driver places, adult-to-child arrangements and health or accessibility restrictions for your selected product.

FAMILIES

Children

Choose by the youngest traveller, not by the adults’ preferred itinerary.

Current products use minimum ages of six or eight. A child normally rides as a passenger. Cold tolerance, the length of the transfer, bathroom timing and the full duration matter as much as the published age limit.

Compare tours by age
Age 6 or 7

Use one of the age-six products and verify the latest rule before purchase.

Age 8+

The full comparison becomes available, subject to each operator’s terms.

Cold

Bring warm personal layers even when a protective suit is supplied.

Long day

Reykjavík combinations can last around ten hours, with only part of the day on the snowmobile.

OPERATOR DECISION

Cancellations

A tour can change even after the lowland road journey has started.

CHANGE

Route

The guide may choose another safe glacier route, vehicle or operating area.

DELAY

Timing

Weather, road access or group movement can extend the day. Avoid tight onward connections.

OMIT

Ice feature

A condition-dependent cave or similar element may be inaccessible while another part of the tour proceeds.

CANCEL

Activity

Read the live terms for refund or rebooking rules. Do not rely on a summary recorded on an earlier date.

FAQ

FAQ

Direct answers to the main safety questions.

Is it safe to visit Langjökull?

A guided visit can be managed safely when visitors follow the operator, official road information and weather warnings. The glacier itself remains a changing natural environment.

Can I walk onto the glacier without a guide?

Visitors without glacier training and the proper equipment should not walk onto Langjökull. Snow can hide deep crevasses, and safe routes change.

Can beginners ride a snowmobile?

Yes. The guided listings are marketed to beginners and include protective equipment, operating instructions and a briefing.

Do I need a driving licence?

A valid driving licence is required to operate a snowmobile on the current listings. Passengers normally do not need one.

Can children join?

Yes, but the current minimum age is either six or eight depending on the product.

What should I wear?

Wear warm technical layers, a waterproof and windproof outer layer, warm socks, gloves and suitable footwear. The operator’s protective suit is worn over your clothing.

What happens in bad weather?

The operator may alter the route, change the transfer, delay, omit a condition-dependent element or cancel.

Can I drive onto Langjökull?

Do not treat a map pin, road track or vehicle trail as permission to drive onto the glacier. Use the operator’s specialist transfer.

What is Iceland’s emergency number?

Call 112. SafeTravel is the official source for current alerts and any temporary backup contact.
